This Senator is Shorting The US Economy

insider trading Nov 04, 2022

We're back this week with another edition of all the "insider trades" our US politicians are making.

While this usually covers Nancy Pelosi almost exclusively, this week Senator Thomas Carper takes center stage.

If you've never heard the name before, Senator Carper is the senior United States Senator from Delaware.

What's very interesting about Senator Carper is that he is also a senior member of the Finance Committee -- where he serves as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness.

Let's just say that Senator Carper is privy to certain economic information that some investors would pay millions for. And Senator Carper was busy in October putting that information to work with over 30 trades.

While the Senator was buying U.S. Treasury Bills, the more interesting purchase was in an ETF called the, "Ranger Equity Bear ETF (HDGE:US)".

While we're guessing that you never heard of this ETF before, this ETF basically gives its investors exposure to the short side of the market.

The aim of this ETF is to, “identify securities with low earnings quality or aggressive accounting which may be intended on the part of company management to mask operational deterioration and bolster the reported earnings per share over a short time period.”

Basically, it's a long-winded way of saying its goal is to short the US stock market when they believe earnings and forecasts are overstated. Aka, if the market or economy tanks, Senator Carper could make a lot of money.

Now normally someone buying this ETF wouldn't spark much interest, however when Senator Carper does it -- it's a whole different story, given his board positions.

But it doesn't stop there! The Senator was also spotted exiting the position in ProShares Short QQQ (PSQ:US), which provides inverse exposure to Large Cap U.S. Equities.

Mr. Carper invested in PSQ in March this year when the closing price was $13.26 and exited his investment on October 05 at a closing price of $14.12. He also reported two additional short trades in PSQ at similar prices.

While there are a few more select trades, these are by far the most notable as Senator Carper is literally making a bet that the US economy will tank and he's the one who serves on the Finance Committee for our nation.

If that's not corruption, then we're not sure what is.
